Hollywood wins U.K. piracy battle
LONDON -- The Hollywood studios have won a landmark legal victory in the U.K. against online pirates. Blighty's top telco BT has been ordered by Hon. Justice Arnold in the Royal Courts of Justice in London to shut down access to file-sharing website Newzbin2, which he deemed guilty of copyright infringements. BT, which is the U.K.'s biggest Internet service provider with 6 million customers, has 14 days to comply with the order. Wednesday's judgment confirmed a ruling made by the same judge on July 28. The case, which was brought by 20th Century Fox, Universal, Warner Bros., Paramount, Disney and Columbia Pictures, is the first of its kind in Blighty. It creates a precedent, which will allow the studios to move against similar sites. The film biz reacted with overwhelming praise for the court's decision. David Puttnam, prexy of the Film Distributors' Assn., said: "This is a very significant day for the U.K.'s creative industries. The law is clear. Industrial online piracy is illegal and can be stopped." Chris Marcich, prexy and m.d. for Europe, Middle East and Africa for the Motion Picture Assn., said: "This is a win for the creative sector. Securing the intervention of the ISPs was the only way to put the commercial pirates out of reach for the majority of consumers. This move means that we can invest more in our own digital offerings delivering higher quality and more variety of products to the consumer." BT will be liable for all costs associated with the action, and has also been instructed to block any new website that Newzbin2 sets up. Contact Leo Barraclough at leo.barraclough@variety.com

Asked about the state of Hasbro's movie plans after Universal previously dropped a planned Ouija film due to budget concerns, Goldner said the partners are still working on Stretch Armstrong and Candyland and have Battleship coming out next year, putting the company in good shape. That is "the same process we have gone through on the Ouija brand," although at a lower level of spending, he said. Goldner added that the script is in good shape and is being polished now, meaning that the film could be back with a studio shortly. "Courageous" performs strongly
'Courageous' opened at $9.1 million over the weekend. Sherwood Pictures, the moviemaking ministry of Sherwood Church in Albany, Ga., is a better judge of its audience than the tracking services are. Its most recent film, "Courageous" (see review, page 29), released by Sony's TriStar Pictures, minted $9.1 million from just 1,161 Stateside locations in its opening weekend (Sept. 30-Oct. 2)."Courageous," which didn't even figure in pre-weekend tracking services, started out strong before it even debuted, with advanced ticket sales totaling around $2 million. The film continued to build momentum throughout the weekend, surprising most B.O. observers by topping a trio of higher-profile wide releases that included "Dream House" and "50/50."It's the latest example in a string of faith-based pics that have overperformed at the B.O.Earlier this year, Sony released sports biopic "Soul Surfer," which cumed $43.9 million -- more than four times its opening -- and while family film "Dolphin Tale" isn't exactly faith-based, Warners has marketed the pic to that segment. The film surged to No. 1 in its second frame and has grossed $39.2 million through Oct. 5.Both of those titles, along with "Courageous," received rare (though not necessarily among faith-based pics) A+ CinemaScore ratings."Courageous" tells the story of four police officers, who after a tragedy, struggle in their faith and with their roles as father and husband.Sony targeted the film to church groups as well as fans of Sherwood films. The company's "Fireproof," which opened to $6.8 million, became 2008's highest-grossing independent release, cuming $33.5 million domestically. "Courageous" cost only $2 million, while "Fireproof" was made for half that. Contact Andrew Stewart at andrew.stewart@variety.com

Hugh Jackman's 'Real Steel' Hero Is 'The Anti-Father'
Hugh Jackman is, quite possibly, the perfect man. He sings, he dances, he can do comedy and drama and action and romance, hes easy on the eyes. But most importantly, hes a nice guy. So whats this all-around good bloke doing playing bad dad Charlie Kenton in Real Steel? Or Drover in Australia? Or Wolverine? Jackman told MTV News that he was brought up to be polite to people, be nice, kind, respectful. Because of his natural gentlemanly state, hes attracted to characters that are considerably less than perfect. I think Im pretty boring, Jackman said. I much prefer the rebellious, slightly wilder people. He pointed out that his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, was expelled from 12 schools or something. In Real Steel Jackman plays the anti-father. He said, Most of my scenes are with my son who I havent seen since birth, and Im really mean to him pretty much the whole movie. It was a welcome departure for the actor and father of two, whose personal parenting philosophy prevents him from unleashing any unnecessary nastiness. You want to say things at times that you knew if youd said them would put them in therapy for an extra 20 years. And you dont. You shove it down. Despite his onscreen obnoxiousness, Jackman didnt refrain from showing Real Steel to his kids, who were intrigued rather than put off by Kentons lack of parenting skills. They were like, So we can drink sodas for breakfast? Tell us what you think about Jackman's "Real Steel" performance in the comments section and on Twitter!

In an interview with The Associated Press about the channel's 15th anniversary, Ailes said he had no regrets about bringing her on board. "I hired Sarah Palin because she was hot and got ratings," he told the news agency. Fox News Channel anchor Greta Van Susteren later tried to clarify Ailes' remarks about Palin's hotness, saying he meant that Palin was hired because she was popular, not because she was good-looking. "His use of the term 'hot' was not meant in a cheap way but rather to describe how everyone in the TV business after the 2008 election was trying to hire the Governor," Van Susteren wrote on her blog. "TV execs in every network knew she would get the viewers." Are you disappointed that Palin won't run for the presidency? Do you think she's "hot" - in the popular sense?
